Rugged controller: direct wired connection

Use this setup when you connect the Blueye rugged controller directly to the drone with an Ethernet cable, without the surface unit. Without the surface unit there is no DHCP server, so the controller cannot get an IP address automatically. You must set a static IP.

Set the static IP inside the normal DHCP pool (for example 192.168.1.200). Addresses outside the pool are often used as fixed IPs by external equipment — cameras, sonars, and positioning systems — and a collision makes the equipment unreachable.

If an Oculus multibeam is mounted on the drone, it must be given a static IP as well. Like the controller, the multibeam normally gets its address from the surface unit, so on a direct wired connection it is never assigned one and will not appear in the ViewPoint software. Set it to 192.168.1.202 using the ViewPoint software — see Oculus multibeam sonar for details.

1. Open More connection settings

Open Settings, select Connections, then select More connection settings.

2. Open Ethernet

Select Ethernet.

3. Configure the static IP

Make sure the Ethernet toggle is off. Select Configure Ethernet device and enter:

• Select Ethernet device: eth0
• Connection type: Static IP
• IP address: 192.168.1.200
• Netmask: 255.255.255.0
• DNS address: 8.8.8.8
• Default gateway: 192.168.1.1

Select Save.

4. Connect and enable Ethernet

Connect the Ethernet cable from the drone to the controller. Turn the Ethernet toggle on. The status shows Connected.

Open the Blueye App and connect to the drone as normal.

Go back to normal operation

To use the controller with the surface unit again, open Configure Ethernet device and set the connection type back to DHCP.
