Introduction
Blueye External Storage enables fast and flexible transfer of large video files from the ROV. As 4K recording increases file sizes and wireless transfer times, this solution lets you store footage directly on a removable drive for quick access.
The device is a waterproof aluminum canister that connects to the ROV's guest port and supports USB storage, with flexibility for alternatives like microSD (via adapter). Media can still be accessed through the Blueye App, or transferred directly to a computer for significantly faster offloading.
The Blueye External Storage is compatible with the X1, X3, and X7 models.
How to install
The Blueye External Storage is USB based and must be connected to Guest Port 3 (GP3).
WARNING: Always power off the ROV before connecting or disconnecting external equipment to prevent damage, also when using the Quick Connect.
Mounting the canister
Detailed step-by-step instructions with photos will be added to this article.
There are two ways to mount the Blueye External Storage on the drone.
Top mount. The canister can be mounted on top of the drone with a GoPro-style mount, the same way the Blueye External Light and External Camera are mounted. See the top mount section of the Blueye External Camera article for those instructions.
Battery cover clip. Alternatively, a custom clip is attached to the drone's battery cover with double-sided tape, in the same way a GoPro helmet mount is fitted. The External Storage then snaps into the clip.
How to use the External Storage
The fastest way to get large recordings off the drone is to open the canister, take out the USB flash drive, and connect it directly to your computer. Transfers then run at the drive's full USB 3.1 speed, rather than over the wireless link.
The mechanical housing of the Blueye External Storage is designed around the Samsung USB Flash Drive. When you connect it to the drone, you will be prompted to format the drive with the exFAT file system in the Blueye App. Information about available capacity is displayed in the app.
Transferring files without removing the drive
You do not have to take the drive out to reach your files. Media stored on the External Storage transfers exactly like media on the drone's internal storage, both in the Blueye App and in the Blunux Web App. In both, a small icon on each file indicates whether it is stored on the removable drive or on the internal storage.
